Total Organic Carbon / Nitrogen (TOC / TN)

Total carbon (TC) and total nitrogen (TN) concentrations are determined by combustion/gas chromatography (Carlo Erba NA-1500 CNS analyser). Total inorganic carbon (TIC) has been measured on a CM 5012 CO₂ Coulometer (UIC) after acidification with H₃PO₄. Total organic carbon (TOC) was calculated as the difference of TC and TIC. TN was assumed to be of organic origin and the C/N-ratio was calculated as the molar ratio of TOC and TN.
