METROL partner within the Max Planck Institute for Marine Microbiology (MPI) is the Research Group for Biogeochemistry - one of the core groups of the institute. Its activities focus on pathways, regulations and interactions of marine microbial and geochemical processes in sediments; carbon, nitrogen, sulfur and iron cycles. They will lead WP1 and will be responsible for the scientific, administrative and financial coordination of the project. Scientifically, they will participate in all work packages and thereby ensure close working contacts to all partners. Primarily, the MPI will analyze: pore water chemistry, sediment mixing and diffusion, sulfate reduction, populations of sulfate reducing bacteria, and perform experiments on the regulation of methane oxidation.
